NG3W's History
Learned cw at the age of 7 from my big brother who was a ham at the time. Listened to all the fun on his HR-10 receiver, when he was asleep. Licensed as WB3EUM in 1976. Upgraded to General after about 9 months working cw traffic nets. First rig was a new HW-8 I built while in high school and operated CW the first several years as a ham. Went to college at F.I.T. and majored in electronics. While there I designed turn stile beam antennas for use with the Oscar Satellites. Spent much of my time NOT studying and working 15 meter DX. Over the years I have homebrewed several solid state transceivers experimenting with low drift VFO designs for those far away places of extreme weather. Like out in the back yard. Licensed as NG3W in 1987 and ran VE sessions in the area for about 10 years. Spend much of my time on 160/80/40 meters. Did do some work on weak signal 2 and 6 meter propagation but fewer and fewer guys are using cw. Lately been bitten by the bug of homebrewing tube transmitters, albeit some are on the high power side of life, 7 – 8 watts.
