WA3ELQ History
I was first licensed in 1965 as WN3ELQ. In 1966 I passed my general class exam and became WA3ELQ. I passed the advanced class exam in 1968, and finally achieved extra class in January 2002. I am currently active on most of the HF bands as well as on 2 meters, 220, and 432. Most of my operating is on phone, although as I become more involved with QRP I am reviving my CW skills. I do enjoy building equipment (as time permits). However, as my skills at designing equipment are limited, I work mostly with kits or from published schematics. I am also an active member of the Warminster Amateur Radio Club, Warminster, PA.
When I was first licensed as a ham, I built my own first transmitter and got on the air. Although it was supposed to be a little more powerful, the output was QRP level. As I was able to obtain better equipment, I got away from QRP, but I have rarely run more than 100 watts. A couple of years ago some members of the EPA QRP Club displayed their QRP rigs at the Warminster Amateur Radio Club’s homebrew night. As they described some of their QRP activities, it re-ignited my interest. Although my hamming time is very limited, I have built (and am building) several QRP rigs, antenna tuners, and antennas. I have had the opportunity to operate QRP both from the shack and in various portable locations, including near-QRP (10 watts pep) operation from Aruba on Field Day 2004.
